I had an ARC of Game Misconduct and loved it (I've never watched a hockey game in my life, and that mattered not in the slightest) so I really appreciate these insights into your research and thinking.

thank you so much!! i'm so happy you enjoyed it despite not being into the sport itself, and the research especially. :) (and about never having seen a hockey game...is it too much to say lucky? i obviously love the sport so much but also, this way lies only pain).

Hi hi! I have yet to read your book, so some of the references to your own characters probably flew over my head, but i enjoyed this letter regardless. Or -- enjoyed is a strong word, but i don't know much about hockey at all, and i love learning more about it. I've already read some of the articles you linked, but i always love being reminded of their existence. The reality is chilling and frankly extremely upsetting, but i hope these articles and documentaries are only the first step, and that it means the culture is shifting. I realise it doesn't look that way now, but i can only hope. As for the characters, again, i haven't read your book yet, which i'll have to amend soon, but just the amount of research really makes me excited and anticipatory of the depth ill find in it. Sometimes i am extremely overcome with an unbridled empahty for men, and thinking about hockeys' inner lives really does that. This has turned into a very uncohesive comment, so as a closing thought, i want to say i really enjoy getting to see even just a little glimpse of the behind the scenes of building a book and building characters, so thank you for sharing!!

hello! (and it's not out until may so that's not surprising, i was still trying to do a little bit of writing about them without too many spoilers--i hope you do enjoy it if and when you read!). i'm really happy you got something out of reading this post, even if enjoyment maybe isn't the right word. :)

i've always been incredibly fascinated by the culture as well, even if it's upsetting and often very depressing. i do think we are starting to see a shift. you can see, for example, the way luke prokop (he's the first prospect under an nhl contract to come out) was received by the general public and the way his teammates on the edmonton oil kings treated him--they were all incredibly supportive of him, and legitimately and excitedly involved in pride night. we're more aware of the consequences of traumatic brain injuries, and the players are given more time to recover. it sometimes feels incremental and incredibly slow, but it's slowly, slowly happening, even if it sometimes feels like a two steps forward and one step back kinda way.

you're welcome! there's a ton more at the google doc link with the full bibliography, but these are some of the ones that are the most pertinent to this story. i hope you enjoy it (both the book and anything you check out from here). :)
